Weights and Measures

NMDA Weights and Measures responsibilities and services include statewide:

  • Weights and Measures Inspections
  • Petroleum Product Inspection and Octane Testing
  • Weighmaster Licensing
  • Egg and Dairy product inspection
  • Weighmaster licensing

 

NMDA also houses the metrology laboratory which maintains custody of New Mexico standards of weights and measures (mass,volume, and length).

NMDA is responsible for the annual inspection and testing of all commercial petroleum measuring devices used in the state as well as ensuring product quality for gasoline, diesel, kerosene, brake fluid, antifreeze, and lubricating oil.  Currently, 12 inspectors are stationed throughout New Mexico performing these activities.  Regulatory activities administered by the division are performed under the authority of the Petroleum Products Act and seven rules adopted under it.

NMDA is also responsible for the enforcement of the Weights and Measures Law, Egg Grading Act, Dairy Act, Weighmasters Act, and Pinon Nut Act.  Routine activities under the Weights and Measures Law include annual inspection of commercial weighing and measuring devices, inspection of packaged commodities for correct net content and labeling, and price verification inspections.  Also included under the Weights and Measures Law is the bonding and registration of commercial weighing and measuring device service technicians and service establishments.
