New Mexico Department of Agriculture Gets Bird’s Eye View of Popular Agricultural Tourism Attraction in Southern New Mexico
New Mexico Department of Agriculture is continuing its efforts to help promote local agricultural tourism in New Mexico.

NMDA was invited to “fly over” the Mesilla Valley Maze in Las Cruces. “The maze was surveyed and cut in early August; and as you can see from the pictures taken from the plane, it’s clearly taking shape,” added Jaramillo. Maze owner and design creator, Anna Lyles, wanted to use the 80th anniversary of the discovery of Pluto as the maze theme.
“We didn’t have a name for the maze so we asked students at Tombaugh Elementary School in Mesilla Park to help us out,” said Lyles. The name “Pathway to Pluto” was selected as the winning entry. It was submitted by second grade student Miranda Romero.
“I invited Miranda and her parents, along with NMDA, to fly over the maze so they could see its design. When you are up there, you can actually see how spectacular it is,” added Lyles.
“We hope more residents will take the time to visit a corn maze, maybe even enjoy a hay ride. It’s great family fun and a great opportunity for everyone to learn and reflect on the importance of our agricultural industry,” Jaramillo stated.
The Mesilla Valley Maze will be open to the public starting September 25, 2010, and will wrap up with a Pecan Festival on October 31, 2010. Southern New Mexico is also home to a corn maze in La Union, which is slated to open September 24, 2010, and run through November 7, 2010.
