Funding Assistance Programs

How to Apply for Federal State Marketing Improvement Program Funding (Deadline is January 31,2011):

(Las Cruces, NM) New Mexico Department of Agriculture (NMDA) is now accepting proposals on behalf of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for the Federal-State Marketing Improvement Program (FSMIP).  FSMIP funds a wide range of projects that address challenges and opportunities in marketing, transporting, and distributing U.S. food and agricultural products domestically and internationally.

“The funding provides our producers or producer groups an opportunity to be creative in their marketing efforts and address barriers they may be facing in the various channels of trade by leveraging their dollars,” said Felicia Frost, NMDA marketing specialist.

Eligible agricultural categories include livestock, livestock products, food and feed crops, fish and shellfish, horticulture, viticulture, apiary, and forest products as well as processed or manufactured products derived from such commodities.

The proposals may deal with challenges or opportunities manifesting at any stage of the marketing chain including direct, wholesale, and retail; this may involve small-, medium-, or large-scale agricultural entities but should potentially benefit multiple producers or agribusinesses. Proposals that benefit one business or an individual will be not considered.

NMDA serves as the fiscal agent for the USDA/FSMIP funds.  The deadline to submit proposals to NMDA is 5 p.m. Monday, January 31, 2011.  For more information on the FSMIP grants, contact Felicia Frost at NMDA at (575) 646-4929.  Program guidelines can be found at www.ams.usda.gov/FSMIP.
