Consumer Services routinely inspects the accuracy of the net content of packaged commodities sold by weight, measure, or count. The procedure we use for compliance testing and checking the net contents of packaged goods is contained in the latest edition of National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Handbook 133. The purpose of this inspection is to ensure the consumers are getting what they pay for. These types of random inspections are conducted with all packages to ensure the net contents of the package meet the labeled quantity. Some examples of packages inspected are milk, bread, chips, canned goods, meats, cereals, ice cream, livestock and pet feed, seed, and numerous other commodities.
