Pet Food and Specialty Pet Food Registration
In order to legally sell a pet food or specialty pet food in New Mexico, the manufacturer or distributor must register the product by submitting an Application for Registration of Commercial Feeds (application continuation form also available), a legible copy of the complete product label, and the registration/inspection fee. Please refer to the Feed Registration Fact Sheet for additional information.
As part of the registration process, these products must meet the label requirements of NMDA's Commercial Feed Law and associated regulations. All Pet Food and Specialty Pet Food products are registered as commercial feeds and must be registered with NMDA prior to any product distribution in New Mexico. All products are registered annually. Products can be registered any time during the year using the Application for Registration of Commercial Feeds. Once a product is registered, a commercial feed registration renewal application will be mailed out at the end of the year.
Pet food includes pet treats, biscuits, and training foods as well as the more traditional pet foods. Raw meat pet food diets are exempt only if the meat is unground and not mixed with other ingredients.
Notifying NMDA of Label Revisions (required or company changes)
Please utilize the Label Revision Notification Form to submit all commercial feed (including pet food/treats) label revisions to our office during the year. This form is not necessary during the renewal application period. Please include on the form your NMDA Company ID, NMDA Product ID, product name as previously registered, revisions made, and product size where indicated. Please include the NMDA Product ID on the label you are submitting as well. There are many labels with similar names and this will assist us in processing your changes and will result in accurate replacement of revised labels.
